The 5 Foundational Mental Tools You Absolutely Need to Improve Discipline and Build Positive Habits to Excel in Your Life!
First, to be fair, the word discipline, by itself, doesn’t have the best reputation. It’s often associated with pain and punishment, which sounds the opposite of fun, but there’s no denying that it’s essential for living a happier and far more successful life. Where would we be without the ability to be disciplined and consistent and turn negative habits into positive ones? Addiction, alcoholism, time-wasting, repeating emotional insecurities, inability to get things done, having our lives ransacked by procrastination, no lasting success, and hardly ever achieving our goals are just a few of the things that come immediately to mind.
Imagine what would life be like without the ability to work consistently toward a goal? Or toward improving your personal and professional relationships? Or while parenting and raising children, or while trying to replicate success you’ve had in the past, etc.? And what about enlightenment? Is that possible without discipline and positive habits? Is there a guru or sage out there who has not consistently used meditation for at least a period of their lives?
Admittedly, discipline can be easy for some to adopt, but not so much for others. The good news, though, is that any amount of discipline above and beyond what you currently have will be an improvement and serve you in powerful and helpful ways. And as mentioned above, if you feel that discipline is not something you struggle with, then read on for some insight on how to help others, including friends, co-workers, and loved ones. Aside from that, anyone can improve their level of discipline. (Read below to see if you qualify as having “Warrior Discipline” if you really want to boost your chances of succeeding at pretty much anything). Now back to our story…

I have also used it to help my son Jack (see A High-Performing Mind for details) establish some much-needed study habits so he could perform at his best in school. Let’s just say it’s still a work in progress. :)
But let’s back up. Discipline in this article simply refers to doing something on a regular, consistent basis. No punishment required! Discipline is also much easier to find when it’s supported by having intense passion for whatever it is that you’re pursuing. In this case, you rarely need to think about discipline because the daily habit that having passion for something creates takes care of itself—you just can’t wait to do it.
At other times, however, it can be challenging to focus, particularly when you haven’t strengthened your mind enough yet or established the habit of doing something on a regular basis. Or maybe this isn’t an issue for you, but do you know someone who does struggle this way? This is where Dirty Discipline comes in, because it will improve a person’s ability to build a regular habit to make changes in their life in exciting new ways.
TOOL #1/5: “Dirty Discipline”
